The Fallen of Harlow in WW1: William Page: 1895-1916

THE short life of Harlow resident William Page as read out by Mark Ratcliff from the Harlow theatre community.

William’s parents were William Page, born in Gilston in 1871 and Edith May Thear, born in
Ware in 1872. Edith was baptised on 4 October 1874 in Gilston.
They married in High Wych on 11 November 1894 and William Charles Page was born in High Wych, Hertfordshire in 1895.
The 1901 census shows William Jnr. residing in High Wych with his parents and siblings
Florence and Nellie. William Snr. was working as a plate layer on the railway. The 1911 census
recorded the family residing in Old Road, Harlow.
William Jnr. was living with his parents and siblings Nellie, James, Harry and Lily and William Charles Thear, his maternal uncle.
William was working as a bricklayer whilst William Snr. worked on the Great Eastern Railway.
Private William Charles Page, 1317, enlisted in Harlow and served with The 1st/4th Battalion of
The Essex Regiment.
The regiment landed at Suvla in Gallipoli on 12 August 1915. William died
of his wounds at sea on 31 August 1915 aged 21 and is commemorated on The Helles Memorial to
the Missing (buried at sea). Panels 229-233. Register Index Number MR4.
