THE 4th XI stunned Brentwood 4’s on Saturday with an incredible run chase to claim the win and with it propel themselves into the promotion positions in 3rd XI Division 2.
Brentwood had batted first and despite some early pressure and wickets with Libby Riddell 3-60, Oliver Allen 1-26 and Matt Fisk 2-22 the leading lights the home side recovered from 132-6 to post an imposing 239-8 in 40 overs thanks to some brutal late order hitting.
In reply, Harlow had to stabilise after the early loss of father and son Allen’s with Jack Sykes and Simon Baulcomb using all their experience to chip away at the target and then accelerate. Jack made 66 and Simon 84 but when they were both dismissed plenty of work was required from youngsters Matthew Parker and Ronnie Fuller.
To their huge credit Matthew and Ronnie held their nerve and struck some impressive boundaries, including a huge 6 from Ronnie as they took us to victory for the loss of just 4 wickets. Matthew ended unbeaten on 33 and Ronnie likewise on 34.
Truly a superb win at one of the leading clubs in the county and based upon the age old winning formula of quality experienced players and young emerging talent.
Finally, a comment on Simon Baulcomb. The records may be lost to prevent confirmation but there can be no doubt not single player has ever scored more runs for the club over a career lasting over four decades. It is likely never to be matched. To still have the fitness, passion and energy to go out and play in the 4th XI having once been a leading 1st XI star is an example to all. So good to see him still in the runs. Simon had a long net with son Max on Friday evening. Both made excellent 50’s the following day. Funnily enough at least 5 of the batsmen who were down working on their game on Friday made half centuries yesterday – practice, practice and then practice a bit more!!!
