Letter to Editor: Let’s celebrate a world class sporting event in Harlow
Lifestyle / Sat 21st May 2022 at 01:10pm
SINCE the announcement of the 2022 Womens Tour of Britain being announced as starting and finishing in Harlow, I have seen no end of negative comments about the Town being blocked and inconvenience caused by road closure etc. People of this Town should embrace this prestigious event we as a Town are hosting. Yes there will be some inconvenience due to a few all day road closures, but most roads will be rolling roadblocks and to be honest only affects small areas of the Town.
The Womens Tour of Britain has been running since 2014 and is a Internationally recognised event attracting the Worlds best Women Cylists in an Elite event, broadcasted on National TV and across the World.
Remember 10 years ago 2012 this Country hosted the Olympics and Harlow had the Olympic torch in Town. Thousands came out to watch this event, closing Town Centre off for a while whilst it took place.
In that year British Cycling took off following success of Bradley Wiggins and also Mark Cavendish and this led to the formation of the Womens Tour.
As somebody who was a Gamesmaker at London 2012, on cycling road race events, worked on Tour de France as a volunteer in 2014 which featured three stages in this Country, and also has volunteered on Mens and Womens Tour of Britain Events, I urge people to fully embrace this day. It will bring people to the Town and give a boost to the economy and put Town back on the Map. It is a fantastic day and I for one will certainly be out watching and enjoying this great event. I urge others to go out and see the spectacle of it and especially the finish. Any schools on route get the children outside and wave as the spectacle of 100 cyclists fly past.

Deep joy. Hundreds of Lycra wearing idiots flying around on bikes whilst I’m trying to get to work and do my deliveries around Essex and London.
Oh Steve is that your true opinion or are you just trying to be contentious?, quite a clumsy approach my old son. As Craig alludes to what a joyous, magnificent once in a blue moon occasion for Harlow.
Joyous? I have enough problems with cyclists on a normal day. Ignoring the rules of the road, going through red lights, coming down the inside of my truck. Oblivious to the risks or just don’t care.
Well said Craig Messenger!
Totally agree with Steve…..
To those people who consider the Lycra clad gangs as an asset, have a word with any horse riders in any area and be prepared to have you're ears pinned back. Nothing but selfish to the extreme.
At least it shamed Essex County Council to fix some of its Third World standard roads. A lasting legacy if ever there was one.
Goodness me!. This is isn’t some random all come along middle aged men in Lycra fun bike ride ‘ let’s block the roads of Harlow and cause disruption for the sake of it type thing’.”This is a major world class event. All the short sighted doom mongers, blimey come on.
