Letter to Editor: Harlow Council should call for ceasefire in Gaza

Your Say / Tue 5th Dec 2023 at 07:59am

Dear Editor

THE resumption of hostilities in the Gaza Strip ought to spur all people of goodwill to add their voices to the demand for a permanent ceasefire.

The United Kingdom is one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and has a responsibility to promote and facilitate peace.

The government of the country in which we live is instead lending its support to the large scale violations of international humanitarian law being inflicted upon the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. This is a disgrace that brings shame on all who do not object.

In my opinion, all those elected to public office in this country have a moral duty to speak out individually and collectively in favour of a permanent ceasefire and against the UK’s complicity in the war crimes being committed in the Gaza Strip.

On Monday 27th November a full meeting of Oxford City Council voted unanimously for a Motion asking the Council Leader to write to Rishi Sunak, Keir Starmer, and a local MP, demanding that they call for an “immediate, permanent ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.  Many other Councils have also passed Motions calling for a ceasefire, including Liverpool, Sheffield, and St Albans.

I hope that Harlow Council will pass a similar Motion at its next full meeting on 14th December.

Opinion poll surveys have indicated that a large majority of voters countrywide are in favour of a ceasefire in the war in the Gaza Strip, and this is more than likely to be the case in Harlow.

Harlow District Council should reflect public opinion on this issue and speak out against a British government that is actually giving diplomatic and military support to a state that is committing war crimes, rather than employing all the means at its disposal to stop those crimes.

Yours sincerely

John Wake

Leave foreign affairs to the FCDO. There are no diplomatic officers working at the Civic Centre...

The deaths innocent children should be of concern to us all.

Our MP should be fighting for the rights of disabled and long term seriously ill people that this government is currently terrorising and demonising first. That's something they DO have influence over.

Virtue signalling at it's best. Hey Netanyahu, there is a bloke from Harlow who thinks you should stop going after terrorist's, Well I must stop then says Benjamin. Hamas could start a fight in an empty room, why do you think Egypt or Jordan isn't letting people into their neighbouring countries. As to being one of the permanent 5 in the security council, 5 minutes after we intervened it would be attacked in print as colonialists interferring. The middle east has been a hornets nest since BC, nothing a bloke in Harlow says or does will stop it.

It is war crime yes. It’s awful. I’m A bit concerned about what I just saw on the news on itv. Thirty thousand Ukrainian men being trained in east Anglia to go back to Ukraine to fight. Why should it be up to us to train them? We in uk should remove ourselves from all war and be neutral. Other countries do. We are just attracting trouble by getting involved. Leave them all to their own devices and concentrate on the troubles we have here like a government attacking pensioners and the disabled and closer to home things like why does harlow look so stunning at the moment in the water gardens with its Xmas lights and nice places to eat etc, but it looks like hades party of hell down the other end? We used to have a thriving night life around that area. What happened to all that money from levelling up, or has that been forgotten? It’s all gone quiet now hasn’t it. Maybe they all pocketed the levelling up fund and felt guilty, so they thought they would project that onto pensioners and the disabled .

Harlow Council, on a cross-party basis, has already pronounced on the terrorist outrages and heinous crimes on Hamas.
