THE government has unveiled a new pledge to cut the list of patients waiting more than 18 weeks for NHS treatment in England by nearly half a million over the next year reports the BBC.

The plan, to be announced on Monday, will expand access to Community Diagnostic Centres and surgical hubs, alongside reforms designed to enhance patient choice and tackle inefficiencies.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said it would create millions more appointments and “deliver on our promise to end the backlogs”.

Making the service more difficult to access is not the correct way to reduce waiting lists.
In order to reduce waiting lists, you need more people on the front line and not middle management. It's no good increasing their hours in order to serve the public or add on bits to an app.
"Enhancing patient choice" is about enabling more money for the private sector. More non-NHS providers will suck staff out of the NHS and do little to cut waiting lists. However, it will enable Starmer and Co to repay large party donors who have private health care interests. See https://www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/2024/09/05/labour-private-healthcare-donations-nhs/
