Government set to scrap hundreds of health bodies

Health / Sun 29th Jun 2025 at 09:01am

HUNDREDS of bodies responsible for overseeing and running parts of the NHS in England will be scrapped, the government has said reports the BBC.

The organisations to be abolished include Healthwatch England, which advocates on behalf of patients, and the National Guardian’s Office, which supports whistleblowers.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the current system was too complex and the NHS needed “more doers and fewer checkers”.

The changes are being made as part of Labour’s 10-year health strategy set to be published next week.

In total 201 organisations will be scrapped, including bodies set up by the last Conservative government to develop health plans for their local areas.

The organisations to be abolished include:

  • Healthwatch England, set up in 2012 to speak out on behalf of NHS and social care patients, and to advise ministers when services were not up to scratch.
  • The National Guardian’s Office, created in 2015 to encourage the NHS to support whistleblowers and train a network of 1,200 peer support ‘guardians’.
  • The Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB), which has recently carried out investigations into a range of subjects including the design of portable oxygen systems and the impact of ambulance delays.

I worry when a government decides to undermine the ability of whistleblowers to inform the public of wrongdoing. Abolishing the National Guardian's Office is a backward step as no mention of anything to replace in the new NHS structure.

Can we just abolish the NHS instead a terrible organisation more likely to kill than cure, staffed by the lazy, arrogant and entitled.

In a Sky News article the head of the Royal College of Nursing, Professor Nicola Ranger, had this to say: "Today, in hospitals across the NHS, we know one nurse can be left caring for 10, 15 or more patients at a time. It's not safe. It's not effective. And it's not acceptable. For these proposed changes to be effective, government must take ownership of the real issue, the staffing crisis on our wards, and not just shuffle people into new roles. Protecting patients has to be the priority and not just a drive for efficiency." Remove the managers who are overpaid and haven't a clue about anything related to the medical industry

- and David - Janet is having to deal with 10 patients on her own because Karen is on long term sickness with anxiety or maybe it's her knees this time, but she is still on the rota because she’s still employed and has occasional spells of wellness. Kate is always sick when she has a weekend shift after nights and will often call in sick if she gets a private bank shift as they pay twice as much at the weekend. Tom, the Ward Manager never works at the weekend and doesn’t deal with patients anyway and Joel the Filipino Charge Nurse, who would normally take some of the load and sort things has been on a training course to become a Ward Manager, so he fulfils his visa salary requirements - And the agency nurse is always late.

Abbie, I've heard a similar story arising at several hospitals, including PAH.

I did write last night but I forgot to post. Well I must say.How on earth are you meant to complain about something when you are banned from doing it.That is effectively what they are doing. No Bad news just good news. That in effect is censorship via the backdoor. No way Jose. The staff have to be able to get the same chance to complain in order to highlight wrong goings on. Well this has changed my mind about assisted death I am allowed to do that if you change the goal posts. I was about to enter a civilised quiet life. But there is a serious present here. If nobody's ever allowed to complain what happened when some nutter who hates children decides to put down say for arguments sake all white children or ethnic children or all girls or all boys or all old pensioners or all men over 65. This is only a example. I was told a while ago that nurses were to scattered to complain about a consultant because her husband had a effluential job. This went on for years. Not in Essex. They would lose their job,for doing it. What would happen if genuine negligence of patience happened. No way.. And now because I don't know if the assisted death bill would be watered down as explained by Seamus a few days ago. I withdrew my vote gore it on the grounds that unless we have the right to disagree openly,it enables their rights by default. Let people say there truth.hugs.xx

Well I wonder if we will get a load of 80 percent congratulations. For a job well done. It makes everything the health services do meaningless if there is a genuine problem that we can't address. That's for Seamus.David keep up the good work.hugs
