Chelmsford Racecourse: preview and tips for Thursday’s seven-race all-weather card

Lifestyle / Wed 25th Feb 2026 at 01:24pm

THE latest all-weather meeting at Chelmsford racecourse takes place on Thursday with a seven-race offering under the lights.

The card gets underway at 5pm with a novice stakes in class five before coming to a close three hours later at 8pm as a field of nine tackle the mobile and a quarter class six handicap.

Up first is a mile novice stakes in class five (5.00) and the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained Felix Gem could be the way to go in the opener, only beaten a neck last time out in a much-improved performance from a debut fifth and is dropping down in trip here which should suit. Blue Celestial, trained by James Tate, rates the next best off the back of two successive thirds and is a return to the mile distance should help his case.

Race two of the evening (5.30) sees a field of six tackle the mile selling stakes in class four and preference here heads the way of City Of God for the Karl Burke team, who struggled with a switch to the turf but when back on the all weather at Wolverhampton on January 30, showed he retained some ability on this surface.

Thecoffeepoddotco has been a revelation since being pitched into handicaps by trainer Richard Hannon and is very much the one to beat in race three on the card (6.00) as seven runners line up for the five furlong handicap, with Hannon’s runner backed to defy a 4lb rise in the weights for winning at Lingfield last time out.

A class six handicap over the mile and six furlong trip is up next on the card (6.30) and The Craftymaster gets the nod for the Tony Carroll yard, a winner over course and distance last month. Stablemate Damzon should be right up there too, who also won at this track last month and has been fourth and third since.

Eleven runners will take on the class six classified stakes at 7.00 and preference in this one heads the way of Flicka’s Girl for trainer Michael Attwater, a previous course winner last month and third last time out in a much stronger contest than this so could prove to be too strong for this field.

The penultimate race of the evening (7.30) is an eight-runner handicap in class five over the seven furlong trip. Trainer Hannon could bring up a double on the card here with Signcastle City, a course and distance winner on his last spin and is only up 2lb in the weights for that victory should be bang up there once again.

Finally, the card comes to a close at 8.00 as a field of nine tackle the mile and a quarter handicap in class six, with preference in the finale heading the way of Silkies Sib for trainer James Owen, who is a very consistent type with form figures of 13322 in his last five starts so is the clear pick.
