Inspirational Burnt Mill headteacher made a CBE in Honours List

THE inspirational headteacher of the Burnt Mill Academy Trust has been made a Commander of the British Empire in Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Helena Mills has revolutionised education at Burnt Mill and it’s sister schools since coming there in 2010.

Helena Mills left the Royal Holloway London University in 1989 with a B.A. Hons in History, and after completing a PGCE in History at the Institute of Education began teaching at the Brampton Manor Comprehensive in 1990.

Between ’93 and ’95 Helena was head of History at Bonus Pastor Comprehensive school before returning to Brampton Manor as Head of Humanities for five years, and Assistant Head from 2000 – 2002.

2002 saw the start of a 7 year period as a Deputy Head starting at St Catherine’s Comprehensive for Girls with 5 years at St Bonaventure Comprehensive for Boys.

Helena joined Burnt Mill Academy in January 2010, leading rapid improvement from 27% 5A-C inc English & Maths to the 2012 results of 72% 5A-C inc English & Maths. In November 2012 the school was judged to be outstanding in a full Ofsted inspection.

Burnt Mill Academy Trust was created in 2013 with Helena as CEO.

Burnt Mill Academy continued to secure exceptional results increasing every year achieving a record 86% 5A-C including English & Maths in 2015.

Burnt Mill Academy Trust’s Key Stage 2 values added on conversion in 2015 places BMAT in the top 5 sponsors nationally for Key Stage 2

Ms Mill said: “It is not something I ever expected but I am delighted that the importance of education, and those involved in it, has been recognised in this way. I feel that there are a whole team of people who have worked by my side, they deserve to receive this award too.
