Tany’s Dell Primary celebrate Deaf Awareness Day
Education: Primary / Sun 31st May 2026 at 09:09am
ON Thursday 7th May 2026, Tany’s Dell Primary School was busy celebrating a special Deaf Awareness Day. The school, which has a Resource Base for Deaf children, used the day to celebrate inclusion and promote deaf awareness across the whole school community.
The children had a fantastic time taking part in a variety of activities throughout the day. Children learnt how to sign their own names and enjoyed playing lip-reading games to understand more about how deaf people communicate. Reception watched Rose Ayling Ellis on Strictly Come Dancing and experienced what it was like to dance with and without music. Year 4 and 5 learnt about the deaf role model Jodie Ounsley and Year 5 then participated in deaf rugby.

The school was also joined by two very special visitors: Nicola and her hearing dog, Pippa. Nicola was born deaf and she is a BSL Teacher. Nicola taught the children all about the important role Pippa has every day to help her. She also shared stories about what life was like as a deaf child many years ago, giving the pupils a real insight into how things have changed.
In the afternoon, the excitement continued as the whole school came together. In a fantastic display of inclusion, every class performed songs using sign language. The children from the Resource Base confidently led the assembly. It was a wonderful way to bring the school together and show off their new skills. Nicola was so pleased to see the whole school using sign language and said she was proud of everyone for getting involved.
The school is very proud of all the children for their hard work and for making Deaf Awareness Day such a success.
