dry2NOW the festive season and its celebrations are over, Essex County Council (ECC) is encouraging residents to consider signing up to Dry January to get a head start to a healthy New Year.

The national campaign to stay booze-free for the first month of the year is being run by charity Alcohol Concern, and supported by the NHS and other health organisations including ECC.

The campaign aims to give people a chance to lose weight, feel better, save money and make a difference – with the added incentive that they could be fulfilling a number of New Year Resolutions all in one go.

Already more than 11,900 people have signed up to the challenge to stay dry until 31 January. You can do the same – visit www.dryjanuary.org.uk. Those registered will have the option to receive email updates about the campaign and can choose whether to set up a fundraising page and get friends and family to sponsor them for a month without alcohol. All money donated will go towards Alcohol Concern for research and raising awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol misuse.

Cllr Ann Naylor, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Most people like to indulge in a tipple or two to celebrate Christmas and the arrival of the New Year so January is the perfect time to recharge, and make a fresh and healthy start to the year ahead. If you can take a break from alcohol, you could lose a little weight, have nicer skin, feel more energised to do other things and save yourself some money at the same time.”

The Dry January website contains a wealth of information and advice relating to the campaign, details of live expert Q&A sessions taking place throughout January on Twitter (follow @dryjanuary) and Facebook (visit www.facebook.com/DryJanuary), recipe ideas for non-alcoholic drinks, a unit calculator and the option to download a fundraising pack.
