Local construction companies attended a networking event to discuss the construction growth challenges in Essex.

COMPANIES networked at ‘Challenge for Growth’, a breakfast event, on Tuesday, 13th February at the Colchester Institute and organised by Essex Employment and Skills Board (ESB).

The event was a follow-up to ‘Construction Opportunities in Essex’ and hosted introductory workshops on ‘Winning Work’ and Grow Your Business Grow Your People’. After the event finished guests stopped to attend a further BEST Growth Hub workshop on ‘How to Manage Risk in your Business’. These workshops were tailored to the sector based on the feedback from the first networking event.

The event culminated in a panel discussion, made up of main contractors and developers which explored the skills and growth challenges; looking at supporting the construction supply chain to invest in innovation, technology, upskilling and apprenticeships.

By 2036 Essex needs 180,000 new homes, will see two nationally important infrastructure projects in Bradwell B power station and the Lower Thames Crossing, plus the supporting road and rail infrastructure provision; it’s important for construction companies to get together to discuss the growth and skills challenges.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Essex County Council, said: “Construction is a vital sector in Essex, employing 64,500 people across the county, so the ‘Challenge for Growth’ event is a great opportunity for construction companies to network, build relationships and gain valuable insight and information.

“The session has been set up as a direct result of the positive feedback from attendees at the Construction Opportunities in Essex event held late last year.”
