Harlow is 75: Suman reflects on the partition of India as it’s 75th anniversary is marked

Harlow is 75: A Celebration of Global Harlow / Mon 15th Aug 2022 am31 09:39am

AS part of our series of films looking at the diverse culture of those who live and work in Harlow, we went down to Parndon Mill to interview artist Suman Gujral.

Suman was born in India before moving to the United Kingdom.

Our interview coincides with the 75th anniversary of the partition of India.

The partition is a difficult chapter of history. For Suman’s mother it meant that the country that she was born and raised in, changed its name.

To mark the town’s 75thanniversary, Harlow Council and Your Harlow have launched a project which records the diverse history, heritage, and culture of the people and groups which are part of modern-day Harlow.

The Harlow at 75 project is made up of audio-visual recordings of conversations with both individuals and groups that explores their lives abroad before resettling in Harlow. The project reflects that we are a local but global new town and explores themes such as the definition of “Home”.
