Now the Tories have put Reform in their place, can they finally grasp the nettle they were afraid to prior to the election, for fear of upsetting the flag sh...rs, and ensure the tatty, intimidating flags are removed from our town.

Hear hear Micko. Take the flags down. Put up by racists. No place for them and their intimidation here. It has been a shameful episode.

An interesting fact that nobody seems to have picked up on is that Labour were pushed in 3rd in all but 1 of the Wards.

FuP, I think the word you are looking for is slaughtered, strange that the top story is about a bloke on a roof.

Eileen McManus got over 600 votes, despite being caught out sharing racist views. Shows how low the bar of decency has gone for many a voter. This country has gone to the dogs.

The bloke on the roof is probably a Reformer looking for inspiration. Council laptops are now secure. Time for third place Labour to ditch Griggs as leader as he delivered the most pathetic of campaigns I have witnessed in 35 years.

I'm not a Tory supporter, but am relieved that they still control Harlow Council and stopped Reform. Anyone but Reform is a good thing. And the people of Harlow have systematically rejected the divisive policies of Reform locally. Dan Swords no longer has to fear Reform in Harlow, he needs to do the right thing. Our flag, a symbol of pride in this country, has been misused and abused by Reform supporters and those encouraged by Reform, as a symbol of hatred and division. The so-called "flag-men" are nothing but fascists who are imposing their will on the whole community. How can we have pride in our flag when a tatty, dirty and cheap version of it is hanging limply from lampposts across the town? Its time for them to be removed and banned from being raised in such an irreverent manner. Raise the flag yes, but in places like public or civic buildings on proper flag-poles so we can all, as a community, have pride in our national flag once again. No longer should it be allowed to be used as a tool of hatred and division in Harlow. Time to step up Dan Swords and show you not longer fear these people!

Chris Vince is absolute toast at the next general election hahahaha

Conservatives wiped the floor with them all, left the other parties wanting. People can see the positive changes being made to Harlow, they are long, long, overdue. Thank goodness the people of Harlow saw sense and now the likes of Reform can jog on. Surprised their victory is not the top story on here though!

If only there were any real opposition (apart from one or two voices in Labour) to the cult/dictatorship of Dan Swords.

I have NEVER voted Conservative until this election. The only reason I voted Conservative was to ensure that Reform didnt get in (which they didnt). I would not vote Conservative in a general election

I realise this is a local council vote, but my faith has been - probably temporarily - restored in British people that they can see sense and not march blindly towards eventually having someone like Nigel Farage representing our country. Time and time again voters seem to prefer risking our countries future by voting for policies and leaders that make no sense - if the voter bothered to do their research they'd see they don't add up, have no credentials and are all show and no substance. So well done Harlow!! And I've seen posts from the "Flag Man" on X and it shows that everything anyone defending the flags says about them not being about immigrants is BS. He is an outright racist and absolutely disgusting. They should take their flags and put them in their own back yards, not illegally on council assets.

Why does our flags offend so many. But to fly everyone else's it's OK. Call it what you want, and you do, this is our flag, and if people want to use there voices in this absolutely harmless way, then so be it. It's harmless pure and simple. Our forefathers did not sit in trenches to be told we can not fly our own flags. Shameful attitude.

Tomsk
2026-05-08 10:33:37

Kim, its not about our flag offending people. I will never be offended by OUR flag. Its the people who are behind this "raise the flag" movement that offend. Ex members of far-right parties and groups like the BNP, the Homeland Party, Combat 18, the National Front. People who have clearly shown their racism in the past and continue to do so if you look at their social media. They, and their hatred and division, their racism, their intimidation (if you disagree with what they are doing). That's what offends me. Not the flag.

Me, Harlow

Tomsk I think Kim knows this already but does not care.

Fair play to the conservatives on winning in Harlow, I’m sure they will work well with the newly elected Reform county council. Dan you showed some sparkly shiny things and used threats of if you don’t elect us then everything will stop. It was all tosh of course but it got you past the post. You now have to show results and not pledges and promises, you owe the people who voted conservative that at least. You have 12 months before the unitary elections so you have 12 months to show you are more than just the emperors new clothes, good luck. Well done reform in taking Essex County council.

Not what I was hoping for but I just want to see the conservative burn for covid locally. At least it looks like the cons lost control of the Essex CC

Being non political the right party for Harlow won, the works started to improve Harlow must continue. I’m sorry to see Jake Shepherd loose his seat, along with Dan Swords he must be the hardest working politician, I hope Nidi Hindocha works just as hard and won’t become an invisible councillor like so many in Harlow

People need to stop fixating on the flag that people raised on lamp posts and understand why they got raised, understand the upset, unfairness that has been pushed on the British people. The conservatives got my vote in this local election on local issues as they have proved they are willing to get things done here in Harlow but on a national level I cannot see a clear solution, extreme views, actions are not the answer but also open borders and un questioned compliance are not.

It's hard to ignore the flags when they look as bad as they do. Let's be honest it's less about national pride and more about weaponising nationalism. If I were Dan and his team I would quickly reclaim the flag by erecting and maintaining flagpoles across town, on buildings, car parks and roundabouts. And then remove them from lamposts.

Graham
2026-05-08 13:48:29

Removing the flags is a.zero sum game. This is a cost that could and would be challenged as it is not on Harlow property but rather Essex's it is and has been a matter for the enforcing authority, Essex County Council. Secondly, and more importantly, any removal would see them being replaced in about 48 hours as has happened elsewhere. So what is the point? If you don't like them, ignore them. Nothing more to say.

Unbelievable. Harlow Conservatives have totally bucked the UK trend. What is even more interesting is the overwhelming majorities in each ward. Except for a couple, each Conservative candidate gained more votes than all of the opposition combined. This is a really strong endorsement of a town rewarding councilors for putting the town before the National agenda. Dan Swords didn't need to stand, so seasoned campaigners with a proven track record of success, such as James Leppard, have been seen as the candidates you can trust, based upon their superb track record. Keep up the great work Team Tory. I'd love to hear from the weak and ineffective Chris Vince, a 1 term pony. He knows how days are numbered and the way he put his eggs in the Starmer Appreciation Society means he will be unemployed very soon.

Don’t forget that today is VE Day. All this talk of flags and Reform now taking Essex County Council is rather a sad irony.

We have been told by all the Parties that this election should be fought on local issues. Bearing that in mind and that all but Labour have opposed the reorganisation of Local Government in Essex and Reform now control Essex CC, the Labour Government should now be told that the reorganisation is to be ditched. Afterall the other Parties now have a local mandate to make such a request.

i have no issue with people putting flags up but the ones hanging over roads cause obstruction and should be removed

Seamus

Sam, do you drive a double decker bus and from the top deck? It's funny because when you point out that from the M11 roundabout to the Potter Street roundabout there are English flags, Welsh flags, Scottish flags, Northern Ireland flags and Irish flags and yet the flag obsessed, deliberately ignore that because, it would prove the point that their is pride in the country and the flags are for nothing else.

Could I please take this opportunity on behalf of myself & The Green Party to thank the residents of Passmores who voted for me Thursday.

As the only Independent candidate in these local elections, I knew my chances of being elected were small. But at least I was prepared to give the people of Potter Street the option. 31 others decided to choose that option and I thank them. Now the residents' of Potter Street will have another year of no change to the services they need sadly.

If I were him, I wouldn't be to dissapointed. If you look at the results, Reform was second in every single ward. Not third, not fourth but second. Dan swords ran a better campaign even saying if the conservatives are not voted in then all building plans will stop (Like Occasio house stop?), Also Where I am, thankfully not one political door knocker and no leaflets apart from 3 from Dan and one from Kemi. It's clear he ran Dan a better campaign and now he has to live upto the promises he made and quickly. Dan will show wether those that voted for the conservative candidate's were correct to do so or under dans leadership, they do a starmer. The next 12 months will be interesting for sure
